The SNP+ research symposium “Landscapes under the magnifying glass” highlights scientific findings, innovations, methods and inter- and transdisciplinary projects in and around the unique landscapes of the Swiss National Park (SNP), the UNESCO Biosfera Engiadina Val Müstair (UBEVM) and the Regional Nature Park Biosfera Val Müstair (BVM). The event brings together scientists and researchers from various disciplines to gain insights into current research projects and methods, to gain new insights into the region's landscapes and to learn from landscape-related projects from other Alpine regions. This year's focus is on researching the special features and uniqueness of Alpine landscapes, their social significance, their change and their permanence - all topics relating to landscape research in the Alps.

A central aim of the symposium is to promote exchange between researchers from different disciplines and regions. This can lead to exciting synergies and new perspectives on Alpine landscape research. The three sessions of the symposium will therefore look at both social and physical aspects of landscape research.

Join us as we immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of landscape research and experience the Engiadina Val Müstair region as a unique research landscape that gives us insights into the past, present and future of our natural and cultural alpine landscapes.

Program

Thursday, June 12

Keynote
Prof. Dr. Ross S. Purves, Department of Geography, University of Zurich

Session 1: Perceived landscapes – Perspectives from social sciences
In this session we will examine the human perception of landscapes and how they change. Historical documents, descriptions, literature and cultural structures form the basis for a deeper examination of landscape development and its perception by humans. We gain insights into the past through photography, which visually documents the changes in the landscape, or through the study of cultural landscape elements such as terraced landscapes and traditional irrigation channels. Field names also carry valuable historical information about the development of the landscape. In this session we welcome contributions from social science landscape research.

Session 2: Diverse landscapes – Young perspectives
In this thematically open session, we offer young researchers a platform to present their work and projects on the topic of landscape. Natural and social science perspectives are equally welcome here. Young researchers have the opportunity to share and discuss questions, methods and results. Early-career researchers are invited to share and discuss their research questions, methods, and findings. This session offers them the opportunity to contribute fresh perspectives on a wide range of topics in landscape research.

Session 3: Physical landscapes – Perspectives from natural sciences
This session focuses on landscapes from the perspective of the natural sciences. We showcase methods such as remote sensing, data collection, experiments and modeling that are used to scientifically analyze physical landscapes and the insights gained from these physical approaches. We welcome contributions on processes that contribute to landscape formation, natural influences on landscapes, such as large carnivores, or human impacts on landscape development, including topics such as climate change and its effects. Research on the renaturation and revitalization of landscapes also receives attention in order to understand how natural and cultural landscapes are newly formed and changed.

Exkursion 1: Traditionelle Kulturlandschaft Ramosch – ihre Entstehung und Weiterentwicklung
Die Geschichte der Landschaft wird über Jahrhunderte hinweg im Boden und in vielfältigen Landschaftsstrukturen bewahrt. Alte Bewässerungsgräben, historische Verkehrswege, Terrassen oder Ruinen erzählen von früheren Nutzungen und Eingriffen. Durch transdisziplinäre Herangehensweisen konnten und können viele dieser Spuren erforscht und gedeutet werden. Auf der Exkursion von Vnà nach Ramosch begegnen wir den sichtbaren und verborgenen Zeugnissen der Vergangenheit, die eng mit den heutigen Nutzungsansprüchen an die Landschaft und deren Auswirkungen auf die Biodiversität verknüpft sind. Die Region zeichnet sich durch eine hohe Artenvielfalt aus, insbesondere die Hecken der Terrassenlandschaft sind als Hotspot für Vögel bekannt.

Exkursion 2: Die Kulturlandschaft des Val Müstair im Wandel der Zeit
Das Val Müstair hat vielerorts seine Ursprünglichkeit und die Vielfalt seiner Landschaftsstrukturen bewahrt. Gleichzeitig hat die Modernisierung, insbesondere durch umfassende Meliorationsmassnahmen von 1968 bis 2008, deutliche Spuren in der Kulturlandschaft hinterlassen. Begleiten Sie uns auf einen Spaziergang, der historische und aktuelle Veränderungen beleuchtet und Projekte aus Forschung und Praxis vorstellt, die sich mit dem Erhalt der Kulturlandschaften und der Förderung der Biodiversität befassen.
Route: Sta. Maria – Müstair

Exkursion 3: Von der menschlichem Nutzung zum Prozessschutz im Schweizerischen Nationalpark
Auf dieser Exkursion im Ofenpassgebiet geht es um ehemalige Nutzungen wie Alp- und Forstwirtschaft oder Bergbau. Vor über 100 Jahren wurden diese zugunsten des Prozessschutzes im Schweizerischen Nationalpark eingestellt. Wir sehen, wie sich das Gebiet seither entwickelt hat und suchen alte Spuren menschlicher Einflüsse. Doch sind die alle wirklich so alt?
Route: Punt la Drossa – Alp la Schera – Buffalora
Zeitplan:

• Hinfahrt ab Zernez, staziun nach Punt la Drossa P4 um 8:09 Uhr

Contributions
Please submit your contribution with your registration for the symposium by April 13, 2025. Please indicate whether you would prefer to present a talk or a poster. We will consider your wishes as far as possible.

Language
The languages of the symposium are German and English. Simultaneous translation German - English will be organized.

Food
Lunch on June 12: We offer lunch made from locally and sustainably produced food. Please let us know in your registration if you have any allergies or other intolerances.
Dinner on 12 June: For the evening, we are organizing a dinner at the Bär und Post restaurant in Zernez. The costs will be borne by the participants themselves and paid on site (cost: ca. CHF 35 plus drinks).

Participation in the symposium on June 12 is free of charge. Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the event, accommodation and participation in the excursions (train and bus tickets) and the costs for dinner on June, 12.
