The hard problem: Interdependencies between sustainability goals

Workshop at the Sustainability Science Forum 2021 - Accelerating Transformation

The all-encompassing ambition of sustainable development entails pursuing many goals in parallel. Very often, achieving one goal makes it more difficult to achieve another, and the challenge for policy is to minimize the conflict.

In other cases, however, different goals can potentially support each other, and the aim should be to identify and exploit the synergies or co-benefits. Effective methods are urgently needed that can help policy makers identify, understand and prioritize such interdependencies amongst sustainability goals. This workshop explores how research can help in providing these methods and how such research should be organized.

Discussion questions:

  • What are key interdependencies between priority sustainability crises?
  • How can research (projects) on/or truly considering interdependencies between sustainability issues be organised? What are special requirements and challenges? What are models of collaboration to overcome them?
  • What are implications for designing funding programmes (and their work packages or other elements)?
